Hungry Ghosts

Today I photographed the Broadview grad students. My nightly ritual after a big shoot is to sit at the computer after everyone is gone to bed and click through Youtube videos as I download my cards and start the process of editing my way through getting rid of the bad, and keeping the good.  Tonight as I was listening to Gregory Alan Isakov (remember my last music post??), I saw a thumbnail image that caught my eye. It was a painting, and I just loved it, so I clicked on the video.  Awesome decision!  Click on the image to play the song (sorry I can’t make it bigger). You’ll be glad you did, especially if you like french music with a film noir sort of vibe. Yah, not something that likely comes around regularly on your ipod, but it’s good stuff.  I love the comment below the video…. “this makes me feel like i’m cleaning up after murdering someone in France. with a cigarette in my mouth. & red lipstick”  It is one of those songs though that sets your imagination on an adventure.

Karli & Alisha

Last night I met up with two grads who I had previously photographed a few years ago together. It’s so amazing to have that one friend in high school that you stick with and know you can count on. These girls had come in grade 10 to get pictures together, just for fun. I see them some day being in eachother’s wedding parties, celebrating achievments and sharing new experiences.  Thanks for coming girls. It was great to see you again :)

Sophia

Sophia was so much fun. She has a great personality, a fabulous smile, and she’s confident. She’s also very brave. She asked her aunt in Korea to pick out material and a pattern, and just whip her up a grad dress that she would like. I think that’s awesome!

Regina sessions

On Saturday, I went into the city to shoot a few sessions. It was absolutely gorgeous out, and I shot at all new places, so it was exciting for me. First up was a couple who wanted a session just because (actually I photographed them second, but when posting the images, they ended up first, so we’ll leave it that way!) I’ve known Anne for years, as she’s a fellow Grenfeller. Thanks to her bf Joel for being patient with me as a fumbled my way around the city, taking wrong turns and trying to back out of parking spaces with my big beastly truck!

We photographed at a mural that I have loved ever since it went up. It’s on the Cathedral Free House, and I love it’s vibrance and style.  I had never been up close to see that the artist’s name and website was on the curb.  The artist is Roberto Lopez, and after visiting his site, I was in awe. This is my kind of art! If I could afford it, I’d have huge prints hanging all over my house of his work.  Here’s his site…

The next session (the first one!) was a girl who I’ve photographed before, when her sister graduated. Ashley is a such a sweetheart, and she looked so pretty in her shimmery purple gown. Such a great smile too :) She reminds me so much of a girl I grew up with. In my head I was calling her Carly the whole time I was shooting.

Gregory Alan Isakov

It’s been awhile since I posted anything music related. I may have posted this before, but I kind of don’t think so. So if I can’t remember, then surely no one else can!  If you don’t know who Gregory Alan Isakov is, let me introduce you. He’s a fantastic song writer and musician. He has this haunting, melancholy feel to all of his songs. His music is definately more suited for those evenings alone, with a glass of wine, and a good book.  It’s not your chipper, lively type.  It’s moody, and it’s rich, and it’s magical.  Love it.  My brother is the one who often finds these unique, unheard of artists, so I have to give credit to him for finding me this gem. And again, because I can’t figure out how to post a youtube clip on this new blog, just click on the image below and it will take you to the song Words.  “Words mean more at night, ….  though I write these words by day, please read them by the light of the moon”

Words – Gregory Alan Isakov

If I go, I’m going – Gregory Alan Isakov

I know some people don’t like live versions, and these are kind of crappy quality ones, but I think the live is always more charming :)

Mackinley

Sunshine!! After having to reschedule this sessions a number of times due to rain, we got a beautiful night! The right amount of wind, some golden sunlight and a pretty brunette :)

On another note, this new blog is driving me crazy. I’m having all sorts of problems uploading images, and posting in general is just a pain in the butt for some reason. If you are facebook, I have a business page on there that you can like. I always post a few images from each session on there, so it’s always being updated.  Feel free to find me there if you don’t see any action here!  Just search Paper Moon Photography in Grenfell. There’s another Paper Moon studio in California, but they do mostly pinup stuff (which is great, but it’s not me!)

Ty

This little guy was so friendly, and didn’t play shy at all. He was a breeze to photograph!

Sam & David

I will be photographing this couple at Kenosee Lake this coming summer, and I’m sure it’s going to be a beautiful wedding!  We did a quick studio session the other night, and I was feeling it in black and white.

Funkytown Wedding Workshop

On sunday I went up to Saskatoon (my favorite Saskatchewan city) and attended a workshop put on by Christine Craft of Funkytown Photography.  It was so great to get together with a few other photographers, and one great teacher. Even though I’ve been doing this photography thing for over a decade full time (wow!!), there’s always something new to learn, and I really enjoy going to these types of things to get inspired. The timing is great too that wedding season is right around the corner, and 2012 holds 17 weddings for the studio.  Thanks to the models who worked it out for us, and to the Delta Bessborough for allowing us to shoot throughout the hotel.

On my way home from Saskatoon it had been raining out, and the sun was going down behind me. When I was looking out the window I noticed the way the rain droplets were sparkling. I pulled over and shot a number of frames. Often I see beautiful scenes while driving, and think I should take a picture, but I don’t do it. Whenever I do take the time, it’s always worth it.

Grad -Tj

Tj and I went out last week around town to capture a few grad images for him. We hit a few areas, and managed to find a new one. It’s getting trickier to find new areas around Grenfell that I haven’t shot at before, so I’m trying to push myself to at least view them from a different angle or perspective. This new corner was pretty cool. It also helps that Tj is great in front of the camera.
