Broadview Blitz

On thursday afternoon I headed out for Broadview to do a full afternoon of sessions. I accidentally posted these completely backwards from the actual chronological order, but that’s o.k.  Baby was my first session, and he was super happy and easy going, so session one = perfect! In this post, you will see a gorgeous colorful quilt. I would like to give some praise to it’s maker, Nadine Schmidt. She’s one of my most faithful blog followers, so I wanted to say hi and commend her on such a beautiful job on that quilt. Very cute!  :)

Session #2 was the girl, one of my 2010 grad students. We went out to her farm, which had so many great photo ops. I nearly broke my ankle about 5 or 10 times, stepping in gopher holes, but her yard was filled with the coolest spots. Old cars, horses, dead fallen trees. A goldmine for my style of photography.

My final session of the afternoon is the brother of a grad student I photographed a few years ago. He’s also a 2010 grad, and has a passion for baseball. We went to the ball diamonds and got some shots there, then cruised around town for a few other spots.  Again, I could have broken some bones, as I was setting my ladder up in places where ladders shouldn’t go.  Very unstable ground  does not make for good balance on a step ladder.  Thank goodness he was Mr. Supermodel, and I only had to take 2 or 3 images to get a deadly one. I love this first one. He’s looking so very fierce! And don’t worry mom, there are some big smiley ones too. I managed to force a few out of him ;)

Kenosee road trip

I don’t normally take too many long distance road trips for family pictures, but this family lived 2 hours away, so we decided to meet half way in Kenosee for their session.  Their boys are about the same ages as my two, so I figured I’d probably be getting a workout during the session. I was right! 4 year boys don’t have much of a desire to sit still, so after a few “posed” pictures, we took off for the playground and let loose a bit. Here’s what we came up with.  :)

Why my job makes me happy

I recieved this e-mail yesterday from the bride from last weekend (the last wedding post on here, from August 22nd).  I had been uploading her wedding pictures last week as I was finishing editing them. On wednesday I uploaded all the pre-bridal, ceremony and family pictures for her to view, then the main pictures a few days later, and then I finally finished editing the wedding sunday night and posted the reception pictures for her. This was what she wrote to me…..

Hello there,
So I am sitting at home, bored, and I looked in our gallery and to my surprise there are more pictures up!!! (you got my candy buffet YaY!!) not only did you get that, but sooo many other shots of our guests, decorations, cakes, everyone jammin’ on the dance floor etc. I didn’t expect you to take so many shots of all the little things, but I am thrilled that you did. I didn’t even know you took pictures of the speeches so I am sniffling happy tears thinking of all the kind words, laughs, and hugs shared. Thank you so much Tatum you went above and beyond this time. You have captured all these amazing moments for us to cherish for years to come, you have know I idea how grateful we are to you and we cant begin to Thank you enough!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

I think I’m pretty lucky to have the job that I do. I put in really long hours, I’m working every weekend and lots of evenings, but in the end, I have satisfaction at the end of the day. When I get letters like this, it really makes me proud of what I do too. I don’t often enter print competitions, or get very involved with my professional photography association, but I don’t think all the awards in the world can compare to getting heartfelt messages from the people that I work for. These thank yous are the best praise I can recieve.

Let me introduce you to three of my favorite teenagers (well, 2 teenagers and an almost teenager) in the world. They’re warm, funny, helpful, goofy, loving and are so unbelievably special to me. I’ve been there to change their diapers (not lately, thank goodness), feed them, love them, cuddle them, babysit them, get up in the night with them, spend birthdays with them.  Now they’re turning the tables on me and doing all these things and more for my boys. I can’t say thank you enough for all the help they’ve given me this summer.  I am so lucky and blessed to be  a part of their lives, and watch them turn into incredible young people. Love you guys. I’m getting teardrops on my keyboard.
