World travels

My brother is kind of a wandering spirit. He’s travelled the globe, and is in the middle of a one year trip. Thank goodness for Skype!  He started off in England, then flew to Russia to start the real trip.  He covered Russia and Mongolia and then was on to China. He started taking pictures of some of the crazy English translations on the signs. They were just too funny, so I thought I’d share a few.  He really loved the beauty of China, and enjoyed his time there. After that he was off to Tibet and spent a few days at the base camp at Mt. Everest. We were hoping for a Skype call from his laptop, while sitting on Everest, but unfortunately, that didn’t quite work out.  Oh well. We’ve gotten to see alot of neat places while chatting with him online.  Pretty neat for my boys to see their uncle in all sorts of countries all over the world.  He is now in Nepal and will be there for awhile before he heads to India.  We all kind of live vicariously through him, especially on days when the “to do” list seems a little too unattainable!

Before I get to the signs, here are a few shots from around China. The first is from the Yangtze River.

The Great Wall of China

The rest are all signs on menus or at restaraunts. I’m pretty sure he didn’t actually go ahead with trying any of these, but can you blame him with these descriptions??!!

Danny Michel

On friday night, I did something I’ve never done before. I went to a concert, all by myself.  But I had to.  This is one of my favorite singers, Danny Michel.  My dad and brother really have a knack for finding cool music, and my dad “found” Danny for us all.  I’ve been listening to his stuff for a few years now, and when I heard he was coming to Dauphin, MB. I had to go.  Most of the music I listen to isn’t mainstream, so there weren’t many people around here that knew who he was.  But I knew I’d enjoy myself, and the concert was being held at the Watson Art Center in Dauphin, which is a very small venue, so I knew it would be very intimate and low-key.  My favorite way to enjoy live music.  So I left town on friday afternoon.  15 minutes out of town, I realized my cell was dead. Dang….  Then I got to Roblin, Mb and realized there was a time change that I hadn’t thought of.  So even though I thought  I was going to be an hour early, in reality I was just barely going to get there by the time the concert started.  Double dang…  So I get to the concert, get a table right at the very front, while everyone else has filled in the back.  I had a full, close up view of the stage.  Perfection.  Oooh, my camera is in the car, and I brought it in the hopes of being able to possibly shoot during the concert. I asked for permission, and permission granted. So I ran out of the hall quickly to go grab it out of the car. Problem was, I ran too fast, as I always do, down the stairs, and I bit it half way down.  So instantly, embarrassment, and then a hugely puffed up ankle, swollen like a pregnant lady. Triple dang…  But I made it back to my seat, took pictures throughout the concert, got to meet and talk to Danny for a few minutes afterwards, and even posed for a picture together.  :)  My night, though riddled with unfortunate little mishaps, ended up being everything that I had daydreamed it to be.

Here’s a link to his site, and also to Roger Marin’s site. He was the opening act for the concert, and was also a talented musician with a great sense of humour.

Friendship

I like when friends come in together.  It’s cool to do a session just because, not cause you’re graduating (right girls ;)   or because you’re engaged, or pregnant, etc.  Just because you have a friend and feel like it! Plus, then I feel like I can goof around a bit more, because it’s supposed to be a fun session. No pressure :)

Newborn

I had a lovely little lady come to visit last week. She slept peacefully, except for when she didn’t, but that wasn’t for long. We managed to put her into most of the positions we wanted to, and I got to use my little black garage sale suitcases again!

I absolutely love the shot below. She reminds me of a 20′s flapper girl, with the cute feathery headpiece.

In love

The evening that I left for this couple’s farm north of the valley, I was sure that by the time I got there, I was going to be rained out. It was ugly, grey and getting wet.  I phoned, and she swore it was shining there! Honestly, I thought she was nuts.  I had gone through the valley, and it was still wet and ugly! But as I rounded the curve of the highway and pulled into their yard, there was a shimmer of sun shining through the clouds, and it hadn’t rained there at all. So in the end, we had an awesome evening to shoot, and she wasn’t crazy afterall!  Thanks for the fun night guys.

Family

Last weekend I headed out to Whitewood to photograph a few families. It was chilly and windy for the first session, but amazingly, we did everything outside, even with 4 month old twins!  We totally lucked out with them both deciding to take a quick cat nap halfway through, and we placed them under the apple tree for some cute shots. The second family didn’t have such good luck. It started pouring rain about 15 minutes before we were supposed to shoot the session.  We met in Whitewood, hid out under trees, wooden archways, a covered deck, etc.  My camera was covered by a plastic bag, and I was completely drenched by the time we were done. But we did it!  Crazy Saskatchewan weather. You just never know what’s going to happen in this province!

Baby boy

Here’s baby #2 in one week, who came in with his mom and dad, whom I’d done wedding pictures for. This little guy was a sweetheart. I just loved his dark chocolate eyes.

Grads

Grad casuals are back in swing now this fall.  These girls came together on a frigid september evening. It looks deceptively pretty out in these shots, but you’ll see in the picture of Casey on the bail that it was far from a warm night! Thanks for being tough girls!

Baby

A while back I photographed this couple’s wedding down at Ft. Qu’appelle and we had a beautiful day for it. The day they came for pictures of their little girl, it wasn’t quite as nice, so we stuck in the studio. She made me work pretty hard for the smiles. I think I sang the Elmo’s World song about 40 times that afternoon! But it got her grinning, so it was worth it :) I just scrolled through to check this post and noticed I don’t really have any with big smiles in here, but we did get some!

Extended family

Depending on how good you are with faces, and how much you follow the blog, you may recognize a set of faces within this extended family grouping. I have photographed the one family a number of times, and when it was decided that a big family picture was needed with the rest of the family, they gave me a call. I headed out to an area I’d never been before, Quinton, Sk.  Grandma had a beautiful flower bed and garden that we took advantage of, as well as a few old white fences, beautiful birch trees, and a big ol’ red barn. We had it all! Thanks for having me out, and thank you soooo much for the meal afterwards. I am still reliving memories of that incredible apple pie. THE best apple pie I have ever had, hands down.  Merci!
