All grown up

I go waaaaay back with these two sets of people. The one family made an appearance on the blog last summer, so forgive me if I repeat my story about them. The mom of the family from the first set of images is a girl that I used to babysit when I was a kid. She was the oldest in a family of three, and the TTD bride is the youngest of the family.  Now they’ve turned into moms and wives, and Stacey’s girls are probably close in age to what her and Jocelyn were when I used to take care of them! Too weird. I was also friends with the husband and his sister in school, so there are connections all the way around.

We didn’t have the greatest weather. It was crazy windy all day, and overcast and raining. It did finally stop towards the time when we were about to start, but it was still pretty dreary.  As we were finishing the Trash the Dress session, it started again, and we got a few cool shots in the hot tub as they were warming up.  Thanks for being so very willing to freeze your butts off guys! Northern lake water isn’t the warmest (though it is fantastically clean and clear), and it’s especially not warm in late august, when it’s cloudy and late in the evening.  And Val, thanks for the good meal and extra special, poppy seed covered buns.

I asked her what kind of a pose she was going to do for me.  This was her response…..

The clouds parted enough for just a few minutes to get a handful of shots where the water looked beautifully blue.

Saskatoon wedding

This past weekend took me north to Saskatoon. I used to go to this city lots, being that I’m from the far north, and that was the closest city. I haven’t really driven around the city in years, because we’re usually just passing through. What an incredible town! There is just gorgeousness around every turn.  I’m so jealous that I don’t live closer.

I had a great time photographing this wedding and it was nice that I knew almost all of the bridesmaids, being that most of them grew up around Grenfell.  It was a great day, although there were a few hiccups! The limo bus lost all power steering and breaks in downtown S’toon. That wasn’t so great, but thank goodness I had a clean vehicle, as I ended up taking the B & G and maid of honor with me to the reception. There was also a boatload of traffic, due to the Exhibition being held right next to the Western Developement Museum, where the reception was being held. That kept us waiting for a bit, but once we rolled down the window to show that we were basically royalty (a bride always gets special treatment), we got bumped ahead in the line up. Even with those little setbacks,  we still got a TON of pictures, we had terrific luck with weather, and the evening was fantastic, ending with a fireworks show, courtesy of the Exhibition next door.

Thanks for having me photograph your wedding guys.  You threw a beautiful party.  :) It was so much fun to shoot in some new locations, and it was great to get a chance to see some of my cousins in the city the night before (thanks Daryl for all the google maps and navigation tips!).

Local wedding

It don’t shoot a ton of local weddings, being that our town is only about 800 people big.  Also, on more than one occasion, I’ve already been booked elsewhere when a local couple has called. I do love doing pics around home though. No driving time is a bonus definately!  I also did this bride’s grad pictures, as well as one of the bridesmaids, and family pictures for one of the groomsmen, and dance pics of the groom’s sister. So everyone was really familiar to me. I also had a great time because I had my good childhood friend, Wendy, second shooting with me. While she doesn’t do photography as a profession (yet!), she has a knack for it, and she was capturing moments all day that I never could have got on my own. So thank you!!!  And congratulations to this terrrific couple. I’m so happy for the two of you!  Happy honeymooning. :)

Idian Head wedding

On saturday I shot a fantastic wedding. We had a blast, even though it was a scorcher. The wedding party was fun, and the bride and groom were awesome. The flowers, done by Indian Flower & Gift Boutique, were absolutely incredible.  Shari Karpa does amazing work, and if you are in our area and need flowers, she’s who to go to.  Here’s a bit of what we got!

Pretty sure the above shot was Josie’s capture.

The above shot was also done by Josie. This is an extremely hard shot to get, when the hall is dimly lit, no flash is used,  and the couple is dancing. She captured some sweet moments during their first dance while I was shooting from other angles.

The Macarena!!

Ft Qu’appelle wedding

This past saturday Josie and I headed out to Ft. Qu’appelle for a beach wedding. The couple got married on the grass on the waterfront, with a wonderful view of the hills in behind.  Thank goodness for a little breeze though, because it was a hot, bright sunny day.  It was fun to get some shots in and around the water.  It felt pretty good too!  Enjoy the preview guys! Congratulations. :)

City wedding

I had sooo much fun with my wedding on saturday.  The bride (and I think the groom!) wanted to do a more urban look for their pictures. I haven’t done any weddings in the city in a while, so I drove around for a few minutes before the ceremony to find some cool spots. Well, I found some!  They were very willing participants, and we were climbing up walls, scaling garbage bins (me, not them!), laying on backalley loading ramps, etc.  Great fun! :)   And to top it all off, she had wicked shoes.  I’ve had lots of grads wear crazy shoes this year, so I was very pleased when I spotted the bride’s red heels during the ceremony.  On our way from the city to the reception out near the Qu’appelle Valley, we stopped at my friend’s farm to do a few country looking shots.  They turned out fantastic too. So glad we got lots of variety!  Happy honeymooning. :)

Evening wedding

Any photographer will tell you that shooting in the evening is the perfect time. You get that golden light, and now that sun flare is the latest fad in professional photography, you can do all these cool sun flarey looks, and it’s o.k.! In the old days, that was something you tried to avoid, but I love the way you get this soft, romantic image with a little bit of that evening sun shining in the lens.  It’s not often I get the opportunity to do an evening wedding, so this was awesome. That in combination with the fact that it was with cowboys and horses was even better!!

This was a super fun wedding, and we were lucky enough to avoid the predicted thunder showers.  They hit just before the 6:00 ceremony, but they didn’t seem to get as far as the couple’s farm, which made for an easier time shooting, not having to avoid too much for wetness or mud.  I also had my wonderful assisant Josie with me again.  This girl is only going into grade 8, but she’s helped me with a number of weddings now. I probably talked about her in previous posts, cause she’s just a gem.  If I leave my bag on the ground, she’s got it. If I got to take a shot, she’s there with the reflector. She’s coming up with ideas, grabbing my extra camera and shooting, and just always right there if I need anything.  She”ll be coming with me alot this summer, and I couldn’t be happier! The ring shot on the barbed wire was her idea.  :)

Wedding time!

Last weekend was my first wedding in this rainy season. I was very nervous, as it tends to rain nearly every day lately. Well, weather did not care that there was a wedding going on! It downpoured right before the ceremony and continued for awhile after. Thank goodness, the bride’s mom and dad had an AWESOME house to shoot in until the skies cleared!  We shot inside for awhile and got some really neat stuff, and then we were able to head out for a bit, until it started raining again.  Aaah, Saskatchewan.  Why are you so hard on us this spring???

↑  The bouquet of wild flowers the groom picked for his bride when we stopped at our first location with just the couple.  Super sweet!

Trash the Dress

Get ready for a HUGE post!!  I did my first “Trash the Dress” session. :)   I’ve been wanting to do one of these for years, and when this former bride contacted me, I was pumped. She’s an awesome chick, and kudos to her hubby, who went along with it! That’s a good man.  For those of you who might not know what a TTD session is, it’s a fun shoot, after the wedding day, where you go out and do pictures just for fun, not worrying about getting dirty. It’s also waaaay more relaxed than a wedding day session, because there’s no time contraint, and no nerves!  Some TTD sessions are super crazy, where the bride actually ends up ruining her gown. This wasn’t like that at all. We didn’t even really get it all that dirty (just wet, as you’ll see further down).  We just had soo much fun doing this.  They were both such good sports, doing whatever I asked them to do.  I’d love to do more of these, so if you’re interested, let me know! I’ve got another one lined up at the end of august near my hometown of Meadow Lake, so after doing this one, I can’t wait to do the next. And at the risk of giving away my approximate age , the next bride I’m photographing is a girl that I used to babysit when I was in high school.  Yeesh. That does date me a bit!!

And an action shot of me, courtesy of the groom.  Thanks Ryan!

First of the summer weddings…

Forgive the order of this blog post. My annoying blog is acting up, and I can’t seem to line images up, or get them in the right order. Usually I put wedding party stuff first, but oh well.  I’m sure it’s only me that it bothers.  This was the first wedding of the spring/summer season. I was glad to get through the day with no injuries.  When I did this couple’s engagement session, I stepped on a nail that went right up in the arch of my foot. And of course it was the first pose I did, so I had to hobble around with blood dripping off my foot for the whole session. The wedding went much smoother! I did get risky when I got one of the groomsmen to help me up onto a garbage can on main street to get a few shots, but I liked the angle, and I managed to not do any damamge to myself!

Congratulations you guys.  Hope you have a wonderful honeymoon.
